One of the first questions I hear when someone starts thinking about maternity photos is, “When should I actually schedule them?”
For most mothers, I recommend planning your maternity session for somewhere around 28 to 32 weeks of pregnancy. By this point, your belly is usually beautifully defined and photographs well, but you are hopefully still comfortable enough to walk around, change positions, and enjoy your session without feeling completely over pregnancy.
That does not mean there is one perfect week that works for everyone, though. Every pregnancy is different, and when we schedule your maternity photos can depend on how you are feeling, whether this is your first baby, if you are expecting multiples, your history with previous pregnancies, and even the kind of session you have in mind.
Why I Recommend Maternity Photos Around 28 to 32 Weeks
There is a bit of a sweet spot when it comes to maternity photography.
Earlier in pregnancy, you may not have the round, noticeable belly you are hoping to document yet. Later in pregnancy, that belly is certainly there, but so are swollen feet, exhaustion, pelvic pressure, Braxton Hicks, and the general feeling that putting on real clothes should count as a major accomplishment.
Around 28 to 32 weeks tends to give us the best of both worlds. Your pregnancy is visibly part of the photographs, but we still have a little breathing room before those final weeks.
This is especially helpful for outdoor maternity sessions around Ocala, where we may spend some time walking between different areas of a location. I never expect you to hike through the wilderness at eight months pregnant, but I do want you to be comfortable enough that your session feels enjoyable rather than like something you simply need to get through.
Should You Wait Until Your Belly Is Bigger?
You absolutely can schedule your maternity photos later if that is what you prefer. Some mothers love the look of a very full, late-pregnancy belly and intentionally choose to wait.
The tradeoff is that the closer we get to your due date, the less predictable things become.
Babies do not particularly care about our calendars. You may go into labor early. Your provider may recommend an induction. You may simply reach 35 or 36 weeks and realize that the last thing you want to do is get dressed for photographs.
Scheduling a little earlier gives us room for life to happen.
It also gives us more flexibility if Florida decides to contribute one of its afternoon thunderstorms to our plans and we need to move your session to another day.
What If You Are Expecting Twins or Multiples?
If you are carrying multiples, I generally recommend photographing your pregnancy earlier.
Rather than waiting until 30 to 32 weeks, we may aim closer to 24 to 28 weeks, depending on your pregnancy and how you are feeling. Multiples often mean a larger belly earlier, and there is also a greater possibility of delivering before the traditional 40-week mark.
The goal is not to hit an arbitrary number on the calendar. It is to photograph this season while you still feel comfortable enough to enjoy doing it.
What If You Are Already Past 32 Weeks?
Please do not assume you missed your chance.
I have photographed plenty of mothers later in pregnancy, and there is nothing wrong with scheduling maternity photos at 33, 34, 35 weeks or beyond if you are feeling well and we can find an opening.
If you suddenly realize at 36 weeks that you really want photographs of this pregnancy, reach out.
I would much rather see if we can make something work than have you decide it is “too late” and regret not asking.
The biggest difference is simply availability. My calendar can fill well in advance, so waiting until the final few weeks of pregnancy may mean I do not have a session date available before your baby arrives.
When Should You Actually Book Your Maternity Photographer?
This is where there can be a little confusion.
Taking your maternity photos at 28 to 32 weeks does not mean you should wait until 28 weeks to contact your photographer.
If there is a photographer whose work you already know you want, I recommend reaching out during your first or second trimester. There is no harm in getting your session on the calendar early.
In fact, some of my families book with me incredibly early in pregnancy because they already know they want me to document this season for them.
Booking early gives us more flexibility when choosing your date and allows us to start thinking about the kind of maternity session you want instead of scrambling to put everything together at the end.
What Time of Year Will You Be Pregnant?
When you live in Florida, the season matters almost as much as how many weeks pregnant you are.
An outdoor maternity session in January is a very different experience from one in August.
For summer pregnancies, we may need to be particularly thoughtful about timing. Evening sessions give us beautiful light, but Florida heat and humidity can be intense, especially while pregnant. I always keep comfort and safety in mind when planning maternity sessions and will help you choose a location and time that make sense for both the photographs and the weather.
During cooler months, we have a little more freedom.
And if spending an evening outside while heavily pregnant sounds absolutely miserable to you, an in-home maternity session may be a much better fit.
Your Maternity Session Does Not Have to Be Just You
Maternity photographs are often thought of as portraits of a pregnant mother, but your session can include the people who are walking through this season with you.
Your partner can be there. Your children can be there. We can photograph little hands on your belly, the way your oldest still fits against you before there is another baby in your arms, and your family exactly as it exists in this tiny window before everything shifts again.
Or the session can be completely centered around you.
There is no requirement that maternity photography look one particular way.
What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?
You also do not need to have your entire wardrobe figured out before booking.
I help my clients choose clothing that photographs well and makes sense for the location we are using, and my maternity clients have access to my client closet with pieces specifically chosen for photography.
Some mothers want a flowing maternity dress. Others feel much more like themselves in something simple. Both can photograph beautifully.
Your session should still look and feel like you.
Planning Your Maternity Photos in Ocala, Florida
If you are currently pregnant and wondering when to schedule maternity photos, start by looking at where you are in your pregnancy now.
For most mothers, 28 to 32 weeks is a wonderful window for maternity photography, but it is not a hard rule. We can adjust based on your pregnancy, your comfort level, the season, your location, and what you want your photographs to feel like.
The more important part is not waiting until the “perfect” week to start looking for your photographer.
If you already know you want maternity photographs, reach out early. We can reserve your date now and plan the rest as your pregnancy progresses.
I photograph maternity sessions throughout Ocala, Marion County, Citrus County, Gainesville, and surrounding Central Florida areas, with options ranging from outdoor locations to relaxed sessions at home.
And if you are hoping to document more than pregnancy, maternity and lifestyle newborn sessions can also be booked together, allowing us to photograph both the anticipation of meeting your baby and those first weeks once they are finally here.
