Do I Really Need Maternity Photos?

If you are asking whether you really need maternity photos, the honest answer is no.

There are plenty of things you actually need while preparing for a baby. A car seat. Somewhere for them to sleep. An unreasonable number of tiny diapers. Maternity photos probably are not going to make that list.

But I think there is a difference between needing something and one day being incredibly grateful that you have it.

Pregnancy can feel incredibly long while you are living it, especially toward the end. Your body hurts. Sleeping becomes a complicated arrangement of pillows and strategic rolling. Your clothes stop fitting. Everyone asks when you are due. You are excited to meet your baby, but you may also be very ready to have your body back.

And then somehow, it ends.

Pregnancy Is Temporary, Even When It Doesn’t Feel That Way

I have had nine babies of my own, and I know how strange pregnancy can be in that way. Nine months can feel like forever while you are in the middle of it, and then suddenly you are looking back at a version of yourself that does not exist anymore.

That is one of the reasons maternity photographs matter to me.

Not because pregnancy is always beautiful or easy. It isn’t. Not because every mother loves being pregnant. Plenty don’t.

They matter because this is one of the only times in your life when your baby is quite literally part of you.

One day you will know their face. You will know the color of their eyes and the sound of their laugh. You will know which foods they refuse to eat and what they need when they are tired. They will become this entire person with a personality all their own.

Right now, you are still waiting to meet them.

There is something worth remembering about that.

What If I Don’t Feel Good About My Body Right Now?

This is probably one of the biggest reasons mothers hesitate to schedule maternity photos.

Pregnancy changes your body quickly, and you may not necessarily feel like yourself in it.

You might feel swollen. Your face may look different. Your belly may feel enormous. Maybe you have stretch marks you did not have before. Maybe you are carrying differently than you expected. Maybe you simply do not feel particularly beautiful right now.

You do not have to feel confident every day of your pregnancy to deserve photographs of yourself during it.

And you certainly do not need to arrive at a maternity session knowing how to pose or what to do with your hands.

That part is my job.

My goal is not to make you look like a different person. I want you to recognize yourself in your photographs while also seeing yourself from a perspective you may not have had while living through this season.

Sometimes we are much harder on ourselves in the moment than we are years later.

Maternity Photos Aren’t Just About Your Belly

When people picture maternity photography, they often imagine a woman standing alone in a dress with her hands around her belly.

And yes, we can absolutely take that photograph.

But maternity sessions can hold so much more than that.

Your partner’s hand resting over yours. Your toddler climbing into your lap while there is still room for them there. Your older children talking to the baby through your belly. The way your family looks right now, before everyone shifts over and makes room for somebody new.

If this is your first baby, these photographs document the two of you right before you become parents.

If this is your second, third, fourth, or later baby, they document the family that existed before this particular child arrived.

Every baby changes a family.

Maternity photographs give you a little piece of the before.

But I Have Plenty of Pictures of My Pregnancy on My Phone

You probably do.

You may have belly pictures in the bathroom mirror, photographs your partner took, ultrasound pictures, screenshots of pregnancy apps, and random photos throughout the last several months.

Keep them. Seriously.

Those photographs matter too.

Professional maternity photography is not valuable because phone pictures somehow do not count. It is valuable because it gives you an opportunity to intentionally step into the photographs instead of simply documenting your pregnancy whenever someone remembers to pull out a phone.

It also gives you photographs with your partner and children where nobody has to be the person taking the picture.

You get to be there too.

What If This Isn’t My First Baby?

I actually think this is when maternity photographs can become even easier to put off.

With a first pregnancy, everything is new. There may be baby showers, weekly belly pictures, pregnancy announcements, and an entire camera roll dedicated to documenting every milestone.

Later pregnancies often happen in the middle of regular life.

There are lunches to make, children to homeschool or get to school, appointments, laundry, work, bedtime, and approximately seventeen people asking you for a snack.

The pregnancy is no less important. There is simply more life happening around it.

A maternity session gives you a reason to stop for a little while and document this baby too.

Not as an afterthought. Not simply as another belly picture.

As part of your family’s story.

Will I Regret Not Taking Maternity Photos?

Maybe. Maybe not.

I don’t think every mother who skips maternity photographs spends the rest of her life wishing she had taken them. That would be a pretty ridiculous promise for a photographer to make.

But I do think photographs have a funny way of becoming more valuable as time passes.

The picture that feels ordinary today can feel completely different ten years from now.

Your children may want to see what you looked like while carrying them. You may want to remember how small their older sibling was when you were pregnant. You may simply want proof that this version of you existed.

You cannot know exactly which photographs will become important to you later.

You can only decide which ones you give yourself the chance to keep.

So, Are Maternity Photos Worth It?

I think they are.

Not because you need a perfectly styled pregnancy or because maternity photos are another box you are supposed to check before having a baby.

They are worth it because pregnancy is temporary.

Your family will never exist in exactly this form again.

Soon there will be another face in your family photographs. Another car seat in the car. Another little person at the dinner table. Another voice calling for you from somewhere in the house.

And the baby you are currently carrying will no longer be someone you are imagining.

They will be here.

Maternity photography gives you something tangible from the time before you knew them on the outside.

If you are considering maternity photos in Ocala, Florida, you do not have to have everything figured out before reaching out. I can help with the location, clothing, timing, and all the little details that tend to make booking photographs feel like another thing on your pregnancy to-do list.

For most mothers, I recommend scheduling maternity photos between 28 and 32 weeks, although it is always better to reach out earlier to reserve your session.

And if you are already farther along than that?

Ask anyway.

You may have more time than you think.
