If you know you want photographs from the very beginning of your baby’s life but aren’t sure about having a photographer actually at your birth, you have options.
Birth photography and Fresh 48 photography both document a part of your baby’s arrival that goes incredibly quickly, but they’re two very different experiences.
The simplest explanation?
Birth photography documents your baby coming into the world. Fresh 48 photography documents those first hours once they’re already here.
Neither one is the “better” choice. It depends on what you want to remember, how much of your birth you want documented and what feels comfortable for you.
What Is Birth Photography?
Birth photography documents your labor, delivery and the first hours after your baby is born.
I join you once you’re in active labor and photograph the story as it unfolds. That can include laboring with your partner, support from your birth team, the moment your baby is born, meeting your baby for the first time, their first latch or feeding, tiny newborn details and those first moments together as a family.
Birth photography is documentary by nature.
I’m not stopping labor to pose you or asking you to recreate moments that already happened. I’m working around you, your medical team and whatever your birth needs in that moment.
And birth doesn’t have to look a certain way to be worth documenting.
Hospital birth, home birth, birth center, induction, planned Cesarean, unmedicated birth, epidural…your birth is still your baby’s birth.
What Is Fresh 48 Photography?
A Fresh 48 photography session happens after your baby has already been born, generally within their first 24–48 hours of life.
For hospital and birth center families, that usually means I come to you before you’re discharged. For a home birth, we can photograph those early days right at home.
Labor is over. Baby is here. Everyone has had a little time to settle.
Fresh 48 photography focuses on your brand-new baby and what your family looks like during those first days together.
Think hospital bracelets, tiny wrinkled feet, feeding, snuggling, baby curled against your chest, Dad holding them, siblings meeting the baby and all of those little details that disappear ridiculously quickly.
If you want to know exactly what one looks like, I’ve put together a full [guide to Fresh 48 photography here].
What’s the Biggest Difference Between Birth Photography and Fresh 48?
Timing.
With birth photography, I’m there while the story is happening.
I’m documenting labor, delivery and the emotions surrounding your baby’s actual arrival.
With a Fresh 48 session, I come afterward.
Your birth has already happened, you’ve met your baby, and we’re documenting the beginning of life on the other side of pregnancy.
That difference completely changes what your gallery will contain.
What Does Birth Photography Capture That a Fresh 48 Doesn’t?
Birth photography gives you photographs of moments you simply cannot recreate later.
Your partner supporting you through a contraction.
The way your birth team cared for you.
That moment right before everything changed.
Your baby’s actual arrival.
Your face when you see them for the first time.
Your partner’s reaction.
The first time they’re placed against you.
Those first minutes together.
And one of the biggest reasons I love birth photography is that you don’t necessarily see all of those things while they’re happening.
You’re busy giving birth.
You may not see your partner’s face behind you. You may not notice someone crying across the room. You may not remember exactly how tiny your baby looked against your chest.
My camera gets to remember those pieces for you.
What Does a Fresh 48 Capture That Birth Photography Doesn’t?
Fresh 48 photography slows everything down.
Birth can be intense and unpredictable. The hours afterward have a completely different feeling.
By the time I arrive for a Fresh 48, you’ve had a chance to meet your baby.
Now we’re documenting the little things.
The way they curl against you.
Their hospital bracelet.
Their ridiculous little expressions.
The first outfit you picked out months ago that’s somehow enormous on them.
Dad changing a diaper.
Feeding your baby.
Big brother climbing onto the bed to investigate this new person everyone keeps talking about.
The bassinet beside your bed.
The flowers somebody brought.
Even the hospital room itself.
It’s not about the moment your baby arrived.
It’s about what life looked like immediately afterward.
Do I Have to Be Comfortable Being Photographed While Giving Birth?
This is probably one of the biggest questions people have about birth photography.
And no, hiring a birth photographer does not mean giving up your privacy.
Before your birth, we’ll talk about what you are and aren’t comfortable having photographed.
Some families want everything documented.
Others absolutely do not.
Both are fine.
There are plenty of ways to photograph birth that tell the entire story without creating images you wouldn’t be comfortable having.
And your preferences can change in the moment. Giving birth does not somehow take away your ability to say, “Hey, I don’t want this photographed.”
My camera goes down when you need it to.
What If I Know I Don’t Want My Actual Birth Photographed?
Then Fresh 48 might be exactly what you’re looking for.
You don’t have to convince yourself to want birth photography.
Maybe birth feels incredibly private to you.
Maybe you don’t know how you’ll feel with another person in the room.
Maybe your budget doesn’t allow for full birth photography.
Or maybe you simply don’t care about having labor and delivery documented but desperately want photographs while your baby is still brand new.
That’s okay.
A Fresh 48 gives you professional photographs from that tiny newborn window without having a photographer present during your labor or delivery.
Is a Fresh 48 Less Emotional Than Birth Photography?
No. Just different.
Birth photography has the intensity of the actual arrival.
Fresh 48 has the holy crap, you’re actually here part. 😂
I’ve watched parents stare at their babies like they still can’t believe they’re real. I’ve photographed siblings meeting the baby they’ve been hearing about for months. I’ve photographed exhausted parents tucked together in a hospital bed with this tiny person between them.
You don’t need someone actively giving birth for a photograph to mean something.
What If I Don’t Want Pictures of Myself Right After Birth?
I hear this one a lot.
You may be exhausted. You may be swollen. Your body may not feel like yours yet. You may have absolutely no interest in doing your hair or putting makeup on.
You just had a baby.
You’re allowed to look like you just had a baby.
Fresh 48 photography isn’t about pretending otherwise.
I’ll pay attention to light, angles and positioning, and I’ll guide you when you need it. You can get ready as much or as little as makes you feel comfortable.
But I really encourage moms not to remove themselves from the story completely.
Your baby won’t look at those photographs someday and wonder whether your hair was done.
They’ll see their mom holding them when they were brand new.
Is Birth Photography More Expensive Than Fresh 48 Photography?
Generally, yes.
Birth photography requires me to essentially place my life on hold around your due date.
Babies don’t make appointments. 😂
I’m on call and prepared to leave for your birth when you need me, whether that’s a convenient Tuesday afternoon or the middle of the night.
I may also be with a birth family for many hours.
Fresh 48 sessions happen after baby arrives and can be scheduled within a more predictable window, so they’re a smaller investment.
If you desperately want photographs from your baby’s first days but full birth photography isn’t within your budget, Fresh 48 photography can be a more accessible way to document that season.
Can I Book Birth Photography AND a Fresh 48 Session?
Absolutely.
They don’t create identical galleries because they aren’t documenting the same thing.
Your birth gallery tells the story of your baby’s arrival.
Your Fresh 48 gallery documents your family beginning life with them here.
Some families want the entire story.
Others look at those two options and immediately know which part matters most to them.
You don’t have to book both for either one to be meaningful.
Which One Is Right for Me?
You might prefer birth photography if the moments you’re most afraid of forgetting are your labor, your partner supporting you, your baby’s actual arrival and meeting them for the first time.
You might prefer a Fresh 48 session if you want photographs while your baby is incredibly new, but don’t want or need your labor and delivery photographed.
And if you’re sitting there thinking:
“I want both.”
Well…there’s your answer. 😂
When Should I Book Birth or Fresh 48 Photography?
For either one, I recommend reaching out during pregnancy.
Birth photography especially needs to be booked ahead of time because I accept a limited number of births each month so I can maintain on-call availability.
Fresh 48 sessions should also be reserved before delivery. Babies don’t arrive on a predictable schedule, so knowing about your due date ahead of time allows me to plan availability around you.
You don’t need to know when your baby is actually going to arrive.
That’s the one part we’re letting them decide.
