When Should You Take Maternity Photos? | Ocala Maternity Photographer

If you’re thinking about maternity photos, one of the first questions you’re probably trying to figure out is when you should actually take them.

For most expecting moms, I recommend scheduling maternity photos somewhere around 28–34 weeks pregnant.

By then, your belly is usually nice and round and obviously baby, but you’re hopefully still comfortable enough to walk around, change positions, love on your family and actually enjoy your session.

That said, there isn’t one magical week that works for every pregnancy.

How you’re carrying, whether this is your first baby, how you’re feeling, whether you’re expecting multiples and even the time of year can all change what I recommend.

What Is the Best Week to Take Maternity Photos?

For most pregnancies, the third trimester is the sweet spot, usually between 28 and 34 weeks.

I want your belly to be a big part of the photographs, obviously, but I also don’t want to wait so long that you’re completely over being pregnant. 😂

By those final few weeks, sleeping can be harder, swelling can pick up, getting dressed becomes an Olympic event and walking around outside for photos may be the absolute last thing you want to do.

There’s also always the possibility that baby decides to arrive earlier than expected.

Scheduling a little earlier gives us some breathing room.

Is 28 Weeks Too Early for Maternity Photos?

Not at all.

For some moms, 28–30 weeks is actually perfect.

You may already have a beautifully defined belly while still feeling relatively comfortable and mobile.

This can be especially helpful if your maternity session falls during the hotter months here in Florida. You do not get bonus points for waiting until you’re 36 weeks pregnant to stand outside in August. I promise. 😂

If you’re already showing beautifully and feeling good, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with photographing your pregnancy a little earlier.

Is 35 Weeks Too Late for Maternity Photos?

Also no.

I’ve photographed plenty of moms later in pregnancy.

If you’re already 35, 36 or even 37 weeks and suddenly realizing, oh crap, I never booked maternity pictures, please don’t assume you’ve missed your chance.

Reach out.

If I have room on my calendar and you’re still feeling up to it, we may absolutely be able to make it happen.

The biggest risk with waiting isn’t that you’ll somehow look “too pregnant.”

It’s simply that babies don’t particularly care about our plans.

The closer we get to your due date, the greater the chance that baby arrives before your session or something changes that makes having photos taken more difficult.

When Should I BOOK My Maternity Photographer?

This is different from when we actually take the pictures.

You should book your maternity photographer well before 28–34 weeks.

You do not need to wait until your belly is big enough for photographs before reaching out.

Photographers can book weeks or months in advance, particularly during busy fall and holiday seasons. Booking early gives you more flexibility with dates and gives us plenty of time to plan your session without rushing.

Once you’re on my calendar, we can choose a date based on your due date, how you’re feeling and what makes the most sense for your pregnancy.

If you know you want maternity photos, I’d much rather hear from you “too early” than after your baby is already here. 😂

What If I’m Expecting Twins or Multiples?

If you’re expecting twins or higher-order multiples, I generally recommend planning maternity photos earlier.

Multiple pregnancies can look and feel very different from singleton pregnancies, and babies are also more likely to arrive before 40 weeks.

Rather than aiming for the same 28–34 week window automatically, we’ll talk about your pregnancy and choose a date that gives us a better chance of photographing you while you’re still comfortable.

This is one of those situations where reaching out early is especially helpful.

Does It Matter How Big My Belly Is?

Not nearly as much as you probably think.

There isn’t a required bump size for maternity photographs.

Some women have a very noticeable belly early. Others carry smaller or differently. Your body may look completely different during one pregnancy than it did during another.

That’s normal.

We can use clothing, posing, movement and angles to emphasize your belly without making the entire session revolve around trying to make it look a particular size.

You’re documenting your pregnancy, not competing for the world’s roundest baby bump.

What If I Don’t Feel Photogenic During Pregnancy?

This is incredibly common.

Pregnancy changes your body quickly, and you may not necessarily feel like the version of yourself you’re used to seeing in the mirror.

You might feel beautiful pregnant.

You might feel swollen and uncomfortable and very ready to have your body back.

You might somehow feel both of those things before lunchtime. 😂

You don’t have to feel like a model to have maternity photos taken.

Part of my job is helping with posing, angles, movement, light and wardrobe so you aren’t standing in front of my camera wondering what on earth you’re supposed to do.

You can read more about exactly what the experience looks like in my guide to [what happens during a maternity photography session].

When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos in Florida?

This is where being an Ocala maternity photographer makes timing a little more complicated.

Florida has opinions. 😂

During cooler months, we have more flexibility with outdoor maternity sessions.

During summer, heat and humidity become a real consideration, especially when you’re pregnant.

For outdoor maternity photography in Ocala and throughout North Central Florida, I generally schedule around the best available light and temperatures rather than asking a pregnant mom to spend the hottest part of the afternoon outside.

Safety matters more than photographs.

If conditions are genuinely unsafe, we make another plan.

And if the idea of being outside while heavily pregnant sounds absolutely miserable, in-home maternity photography is also an option.

What Time of Day Is Best for Outdoor Maternity Photos?

For outdoor maternity sessions, the best light is generally closer to sunrise or sunset rather than the middle of the day.

Most families prefer evening sessions, particularly when children or partners are participating.

The exact start time changes throughout the year because sunset changes throughout the year.

We’ll choose the timing together based on the location, season, weather and your family.

You don’t need to figure any of that out before you book.

What Happens If It Rains on My Maternity Session Date?

Welcome to Florida, where a forecast can say sunshine, thunderstorms and possibly the apocalypse within the same afternoon. 😂

I watch the weather closely before outdoor sessions.

A chance of rain does not automatically mean your maternity session needs to be rescheduled. Florida storms can be incredibly localized and disappear just as quickly as they show up.

If the weather genuinely isn’t workable or safe, we’ll make another plan.

That’s another reason I prefer not to schedule maternity photographs too close to your due date. A little breathing room gives us more flexibility if Florida decides not to cooperate.

Should My Partner and Children Come to My Maternity Session?

Absolutely, if you want them there.

Maternity photographs don’t have to be only portraits of you and your belly.

Your partner is becoming a parent too. Your children are becoming big brothers or sisters. Your entire family is in the middle of a transition.

I usually photograph a mixture of everyone together, you with your children, you with your partner and plenty of you by yourself.

And if your toddler has absolutely no interest in my plans?

We’ll survive. 😂

What Should I Wear for Maternity Photos?

You don’t have to have this figured out before you inquire.

My maternity clients have access to my client closet, and I’m also happy to help if you’d rather wear something you already own or purchase something specifically for your session.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and that your clothing works with the overall look we’re creating.

You don’t need to show up already knowing how to style an entire family for photographs.

That’s something I can help with.

What If My Baby Comes Before My Maternity Session?

Sometimes babies make the schedule for us.

If something changes with your pregnancy or your baby arrives before your maternity session, we’ll talk about what happens next based on your individual circumstances and booking.

This is another reason I don’t recommend intentionally waiting until the very end of pregnancy.

Giving ourselves a few weeks of breathing room makes everything easier.

So, When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Photos?

If you want the simple answer:

Plan to take your maternity photos around 28–34 weeks pregnant and book your photographer earlier than that.

But don’t panic if you’re already past that window.

There isn’t an expiration date at 34 weeks where I suddenly confiscate my camera. 😂

If you’re pregnant now and wondering whether the timing will work, just reach out and tell me your due date. I’ll help you figure out what makes the most sense.
