If you’re here, chances are you’ve spent the last few nights Googling everything from “Do I really need a doula?” to “When should I book my birth photographer?” Pregnancy has a funny way of sending us down rabbit holes, and before you know it you’ve opened twenty tabs and somehow ended up reading about birth balls at midnight.
I’ve gathered the questions I’m asked most often as both a birth photographer and doula and answered them here. Some are practical, some are emotional, and some are questions people are almost afraid to ask. My hope is that you leave this page feeling a little more informed and a lot more confident about whatever birth you’re planning.
Birth Photography
When should I book my birth photographer?
As soon as you’ve decided birth photography is important to you. Because birth photographers are on call for weeks at a time, we can only accept a limited number of due dates each month. I personally only accept 3 so I recommend reaching out during your second trimester if possible, but I’ve had families book before they were pregnant and others book just weeks before their due date. If you’re late in your pregnancy, don’t assume it’s too late. Reach out anyway. If I have availability, I’d love to be there.
What if I’m already late in my pregnancy?
Please don’t let your gestational age stop you from reaching out. While I can’t guarantee availability, I never want someone to miss out simply because they assumed they were too late. If I’m available, I’ll happily welcome you onto my calendar. If I’m not, I’m always happy to help point you toward another trusted birth photographer.
What happens if I go into labor early?
That’s exactly why birth photographers are on call. Babies don’t follow calendars, and we certainly don’t expect them to. Once you’re officially on my calendar, I’m on call for your birth beginning at 36 weeks, and sometimes earlier if there’s a medical reason to expect an early delivery. My goal is to be ready whenever your baby decides it’s time. If I am physically capable of being at your birth even if your little one has decided to join us early, then I will be there. I promise to make every effort possible to be by your side even if it’s outside our contracted on-call window.
What happens if you’re already at another birth?
This is a great question and one every family should ask. I intentionally limit the number of birth clients I accept each month to reduce the chance of overlap, but birth is wonderfully unpredictable. In the rare event that two families need me at the same time, I have experienced backup photographers who share my approach and values. You’ll know exactly what my backup plan looks like long before your due date.
What if you’re sick or have an emergency?
Thankfully, this has never happened, but I believe every professional should have a plan before they need one. If an emergency ever prevented me from attending your birth, I have trusted backup photographers I can call on. My clients are never left wondering what happens next because we’ve already talked through that possibility before labor begins.
When do you arrive for my birth?
Every labor is different, so I don’t rely on one specific number. I ask my families to keep me updated throughout labor, especially after cervical checks when they’re part of your care. I usually arrive during active labor, often around five to six centimeters, but I also consider your birth history, how quickly labor is progressing, and how you’re coping. I’d always rather arrive a little early than risk missing your story.
How long do you stay?
I stay through your labor, your baby’s birth, and approximately two hours postpartum. Some of my favorite images happen after the excitement settles, during those first snuggles, your baby’s first feeding, siblings meeting their new baby, or simply watching everything sink in. Those moments are just as much a part of your birth story as the birth itself.
Do you photograph home births?
Absolutely. Home births are one of my favorite environments to document because they’re so deeply personal. Every home birth has its own rhythm, and I quietly document your story while respecting the atmosphere you’ve intentionally created.
Do you photograph hospital births?
Yes. I’ve photographed births in hospitals throughout Central Florida and am comfortable working alongside nurses, physicians, anesthesiologists, and the rest of your care team. My goal is always to document your story while allowing your providers to focus completely on your care.
Do you photograph birth center births?
I do. Birth centers often offer a beautiful balance between the comfort of home and the resources of a medical facility. I’ve had the privilege of documenting births in several birth centers and understand how to work respectfully within those spaces.
Do you photograph planned cesareans?
Yes. A planned cesarean is still your baby’s birthday, and it deserves to be documented with the same care and intention as any other birth. The quiet anticipation, the first cry, and the moment you meet your baby are just as meaningful.
What if I end up needing an unexpected cesarean?
Birth doesn’t always follow the plan we hoped for, and that’s okay. If your birth changes course, I’ll continue documenting your story whenever hospital policies allow. Some of the most emotional galleries I’ve delivered have come from births that looked completely different than originally planned.
What if my birth doesn’t go according to plan?
Your birth plan is just that…a plan. Your birth story is so much bigger than whether everything went exactly as expected. Whether your baby arrives after an induction, an epidural, a cesarean, or a home birth transfer, your story still deserves to be remembered with honesty and compassion.
Will you photograph blood or graphic moments?
Birth is real, but that doesn’t mean every image needs to be graphic. I focus on telling your story in a respectful, artistic way. If there are specific moments you’d prefer not to have photographed, we’ll talk about those before your birth so everyone is on the same page.
Can I choose what is and isn’t photographed?
You are always welcome to share your preferences and boundaries with me before labor begins, and I will do my best to honor them. Some families want to see every part of the story exactly as it happened, while others prefer a more modest view with nudity and more graphic moments kept out of the final gallery.
At the same time, I do not control the narrative of your birth. I document what is genuinely happening in front of me rather than directing the moment. If you prefer that I avoid photographing nudity but choose to labor without clothing, there may be limits to what I can exclude while still documenting your story fully.
I will always use thoughtful angles, framing, and positioning to capture your birth as authentically and tastefully as possible, but I am limited by what is in front of me. My goal is to respect your boundaries while still telling the story honestly.
Can my partner just take the photos?
They absolutely can, but I hope they don’t have to. I would think you would want your partner fully present with you, supporting you, encouraging you, and experiencing the birth of their child instead of worrying about documenting it. My job is to preserve those moments so the people who love you most can simply be there with you.
Will you tell us what to do or pose us?
Not during your birth. Birth photography is documentary by nature, which means I quietly observe and document what naturally unfolds. After your baby arrives, I may offer gentle guidance for a few family portraits if everyone is up for it, but the story itself is never posed.
How many images will I receive?
Every gallery includes a minimum of 100+ images. However every birth is different, so I don’t limit galleries to a set number. Instead, I deliver every meaningful image that helps tell your story beautifully and completely. My focus is always on quality and storytelling rather than meeting a specific number.
When will I receive my gallery?
You’ll receive a few sneak peeks shortly after your birth, and your full gallery will be delivered within the timeframe outlined in your contract. I know how excited families are to relive these moments, and I work hard to balance a thoughtful edit with a timely delivery.
Do you offer sneak peeks?
Yes! I know friends and family are anxiously waiting to meet your newest addition, so I love sending a handful of preview images while I work on your full gallery.
Can I print my images anywhere?
Yes, but I always recommend printing through a professional lab whenever possible. Your baby’s birth deserves more than sitting on a phone forever, and professional prints and albums are designed to last for generations.
Do you offer albums or prints?
Absolutely. One of my favorite parts of this work is helping families turn digital memories into something tangible. Albums become family heirlooms, and there’s something incredibly special about watching your children flip through the story of the day they were born.
Will my photos be shared online?
Only with your permission. Some families are excited to share their birth story, while others prefer complete privacy. I respect both equally, and we’ll discuss your preferences well before your gallery is delivered. If there is a specific image I’d like to enter into a contest, for print, etc, I will always double check with you first unless you’ve told me in writing otherwise that I have permission to share as much as desired.
What if I don’t want my birth shared publicly?
That’s completely okay. Your birth belongs to your family first. If you choose to keep every image private, that decision will always be respected without question.
Do you travel?
Yes! I primarily serve Ocala, Gainesville, Marion County, Citrus County, and the surrounding areas, but I’m always happy to discuss travel for births outside my usual service area as long as you understand that communication is essential and it will take me longer than usual to reach you once labor as begun.
What areas do you serve?
I’m based in Ocala, Florida, and regularly photograph births throughout Marion County, Citrus County, Gainesville, and much of Central Florida. If you’re unsure whether you’re within my travel area, just ask. I’d be happy to let you know.
Doula Support
What is a doula?
A doula is a trained birth professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Unlike your medical provider, a doula doesn’t perform clinical tasks or deliver babies. Instead, my role is to help you feel informed, supported, and confident as you navigate one of the biggest days of your life.
Do I need a doula if I already have a supportive partner?
Absolutely. One of the biggest misconceptions about doulas is that we’re there to replace your partner, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. My role is to support both of you. I help guide your partner with comfort measures, answer questions, offer reassurance, and allow them to focus on loving and encouraging you instead of trying to remember everything they learned in childbirth class.
Will you replace my partner?
Never. Your partner knows you in a way I never could, and they’re an incredibly important part of your birth team. I simply bring experience, education, and continuous support so they don’t have to carry the weight of every decision alone. Think of me as another person in your corner who’s there to support both of you.
What does a doula actually do during labor?
Every birth is different, so my role changes depending on what you need. That might mean helping you find more comfortable labor positions, offering counterpressure during contractions, suggesting comfort measures, helping you understand your options, creating a calm environment, encouraging your partner, or simply sitting quietly beside you when that’s what’s needed most. My job is to meet you where you are and support your goals for your birth.
What doesn’t a doula do?
Doulas don’t replace your doctor or midwife, perform medical exams, diagnose complications, make medical decisions for you, or catch your baby. My role is non-medical. I provide support, education, and advocacy by helping you understand your options so you can make informed decisions alongside your care provider.
Can I still have a doula if I want an epidural?
Absolutely. Doulas aren’t just for unmedicated births. Whether you’re planning an epidural, an induction, a scheduled cesarean, or hoping for an unmedicated birth, continuous support can still make a meaningful difference. My support doesn’t end because your birth plan includes pain medication.
Can I have a doula for a planned cesarean?
Yes. A planned cesarean is still your birth, and you deserve support throughout the experience. I’ll be there to help you prepare, provide support before surgery, remain with you whenever hospital policies allow, and continue supporting you during those first moments after your baby is born.
What if my birth doesn’t go the way I planned?
Birth is beautifully unpredictable, and plans sometimes change. My role isn’t tied to a specific birth plan. It’s tied to supporting you. Whether your labor changes direction, you choose different pain management, or you need an unexpected cesarean, my focus remains the same: helping you feel informed, supported, and cared for.
When should I call you?
I always encourage my clients to keep me updated as labor progresses, even if you think it’s too early. I’d much rather know what’s going on than miss an important update. We’ll go over exactly when to call me during your prenatal visits so you’ll never have to wonder whether it’s the right time.
Do you stay after the baby is born?
Yes. I stay for approximately two hours after birth to help you settle in, answer questions, support your first feeding if desired, and make sure everyone is comfortable before I leave. Those first moments are often overwhelming in the best way, and I never want families to feel like they’re suddenly alone when everyone else leaves the room. I tend to be more of a fly on the wall, unless you are looking for conversation, birth processing, etc and then of course I’m happy to strike up a conversation!
Do you help with breastfeeding?
Yes, I can provide basic breastfeeding support immediately after birth, including helping with positioning and encouraging that first latch if you’d like. I have breastfeed 9 of my own children, donated over 20,000 oz in my lifetime and been a pumping, breastfeeding mom for going on 15 consecutive years (thanks to all the babies) If more specialized support is needed, I’m always happy to refer you to an excellent local IBCLC, pediatric dentist and other resources.
Do you attend home births, hospital births, and birth center births?
Yes. I’ve supported families in hospitals, birth centers, and homes throughout Central Florida. Every birth environment is different, and my goal is always the same: to support you while working respectfully alongside your care team.
Can I hire you if I’m already late in my pregnancy?
Absolutely. While it’s always nice to have more time together before your birth, I’ve welcomed clients later in pregnancy many times. Truthfully if you aren’t actively pushing your baby out, it’s never too late but I can’t promise I’ll have availability. If I have room on my calendar, I’d be honored to support you.
Do you offer doula services by themselves?
At this time, my doula services are exclusively offered as an add-on to my birth photography collections. I made that decision intentionally because I truly believe photography and doula support complement each other beautifully. It allows me to support you throughout your birth while also preserving your story without asking you to choose between being cared for and having those moments documented.
Booking & Logistics
How do I book my due date?
Booking is simple! Once you’ve decided we’re a good fit, I’ll send over your contract, invoice, and questionnaire. Your due date is officially reserved once your signed contract and retainer have been received. From there, we’ll begin planning for your birth and getting to know each other before your on-call period begins.
How much is the retainer?
A 30% retainer is required to reserve your due date. Because I only accept a limited number of births each month, your due date isn’t held until your contract is signed and the retainer has been paid.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes! I know preparing for a baby comes with a lot of expenses, so I offer flexible payment options. You can pay over time through a custom payment plan or use Klarna, Affirm, PayPal Pay in 4, PayPal Pay Later, and all major credit cards. My goal is to make documenting your birth as accessible as possible.
When is my final payment due?
Your final balance is due before your on-call period begins at 36 weeks. This ensures everything is taken care of before labor starts, allowing everyone to focus on your birth instead of invoices and paperwork.
What happens after I book?
Once you’re booked, we’ll schedule your prenatal meetings, go over your birth preferences, discuss photography expectations, and make sure you know exactly how to keep me updated when labor begins. I want you to feel prepared and supported long before your due date arrives.
When do you go on call?
I officially go on call at 36 weeks for most pregnancies and remain available until your baby arrives. If there’s a medical reason to expect an earlier birth, we’ll discuss adjusting that timeline together.
What areas do you serve?
I’m based in Ocala, Florida, and regularly serve families throughout Marion County, Citrus County, Gainesville, and many surrounding areas in Central Florida. If you’re unsure whether you’re within my travel area, just reach out. I’m always happy to chat about your plans.
Do you travel outside of Central Florida?

Your birth photographer and doula will be with you during one of the most personal days of your life, and I want you to feel completely comfortable before making that decision. We can chat about your birth plans, your questions, and make sure we’re the right fit for one another with no pressure.
What if I still have questions?
Ask away! There are no silly questions when it comes to your birth. Whether you’re wondering about photography, doula support, hospital policies, or simply don’t know where to start, I’m always happy to help. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll do my best to point you toward someone who does.
